F. Scott Fitzgerald – The Great Gatsby
Mo 31.10.2011 19:30 Uhr Staatstheater Saarbrücken
The American Drama Group Europe / tour de force theatre
Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota,
moves to New York in the summer of 1922, and
gradually becomes friends with a man named Jay
Gatsby, who lives in a gigantic Gothic mansion
and throws extravagant parties. Nick is drawn into
a world of new money, decadence and deception.
He discovers that Gatsby is in love with Daisy
Buchanan who is already married but who,
when re-united with Gatsby, decides to leave her
husband. Tragedy inevitably follows: A car crashes,
a secret lover of Daisy’s husband is killed and
Gatsby is eventually murdered because he is
assumed to have driven the car. Published in 1925,
a year before the catastrophic collapse of the
American stock markets, Fitzgerald’s novel
graphically portrays a society being destroyed by
money and dishonesty, an American Dream of
happiness and individualism degenerating into
the mere pursuit of wealth.

A Christmas Carol is about Ebenezer Scrooge, a merchant and financier, who has hardened his heart against his fellowmen, neglected his family, squeezed the poor, sacrified his financée to avarice, and refused to acknowledge Christmas as a unique celebration. He is pursued in his dreams by the spirit of Marley, his former business partner, and by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future. They cause him to witness a Christmas celebration by his poor employee, Bob Cratchit and his family, and that of some close relatives. Watching the celebrations, he learns of the luck he missed because of his avarice and egoism and of his own social isolation. Finally, Scrooge is forced to witness, by prevision, his imminent death, unwept and unsung. He awakens to find out that it was only a dream but is converted by the experiences and the heartless old man turns into a model of philanthropy.
